Brooklyn, NY and Winnipeg, MB based artist, Alex McAdams, studied film and photography at School of the Museum of Fine Arts Boston before attending the University of Vermont where she continued her studies in film and photography along with pursuing a liberal arts degree in women’s studies and philosophy. In NYC, she studied neon light sculpture at Urban Glass while working her 9-5 in documentary film and video production, with a focus on art education and oral histories. For several years, she was part of a small production crew who produced, shot and edited video elements for the education and curatorial departments at the Museum of Modern Art NY, including co-producing and editing MoMA’s online studio art education series, the online courses of which she completed herself.
While co-producing, filming, and editing the video oral history projects of painters Robert Rauschenberg and Helen Frankenthaler with their respective foundations, she became obsessed with the abstract expressionist movement which eventually influenced her own work and practice. She is primarily a self-taught painter.
Alex has a J.D. from the City University of New York School of Law with a focus in civil rights. She is deeply committed to issues of social justice and believes strongly in the ability of art and media to affect and incite social change. She currently works with progressive global non-profits and NGOs developing multimedia content and directing development efforts.
